Hello Sebastopol families and staff. This is a video update on January 25th, 2021. I'm Linda Irving, Superintendent of Sebastopol Union School District, and the Principal of Park Side. You may have heard about the California Department of Public Health and the Governor's Safe Schools Reopening Plan. I'm here to clarify what that means for Sonoma County, and Sebastopol Union Schools. Sonoma County continues to remain in the deep purple tier. The Safe School Reopening Plan allows for TK through Grade 6 to open in purple if the county Covid rates are below 25 per 100,000. Grades 7 through 12 must be below 7 per 100,000 as they are treated like the adults for the purposes of transmission. Sonoma County is currently at 41.6 cases per 100,000. So once again Grades K through 6 need to be below 25 per 100,000. 7, 12 below 7 per 100,000. And Sonoma County is currently at 41.6 per 100,000. What about vaccines for staff? West Sonoma County teachers and staff are slated to be vaccinated at the end of February for their first dose. The second dose is four weeks after that. And it's two weeks from the 2nd dose that the highest protection rate occurs. By looking at the deep purple transmission rates and the cadence of the vaccines, most Sonoma County schools will be looking at mid to late spring for opening grades K through 6, beginning with TK through 2nd grade. Grades 7 through 12 are pushed back even further than that. When we do come back it will be in smaller groups that can be distanced. We all want to come back to in-person learning. It's what's best for students and families and we miss our students. But we can only come back when it's safe to do so. In the meantime, we will continue to plan for opening by creating our Safe School Reopening Plan. When these safety plans to reopen are approved, the state guidance is expected to institute a phased-in approach. TK through second grade would return first, followed by older elementary grades then middle school, and finally high school, which will be the most challenging. The plan will contain the following components: stable group structures in cohorts, face coverings and protective gear, physical distancing, health screenings for students and staff, testing and tracing for students and staff, public communication of plans and reopening status, and consultation with labor. We will continue to keep you posted as information continually changes. You can find more information about color tiers and school reopening at covid-19.ca.gov and Blueprint for a Safer Economy. In the meantime, our teachers will continue to provide high-quality and engaging instruction. I've been so proud of their commitment to doing their very best for our students. A special thanks to CASTLE for working directly with their small cohorts of students everyday. I wish you and your family safety and good health. Thank you for your support during this pandemic. Take care everyone.
